Brazil the G20 leader of renewable energy gears up to host COP30 in November 2025 and the country is experiencing a boom in renewable energy development, which offers attractive options for the Swiss Export of innovative cleantech solutions.
Swiss SMEs plan to export more to Brazil
8% of the Swiss SME’s who plan to expand their internationalization efforts, want to export to Brazil. According to the recent half-year sentiment survey of Swiss Global Enterprise. Which ranks the country on the 4th place after India, USA and the Golf-Region. It’s a good moment to deep-dive on one the Brazilian key industries - renewable energy.
Continues growth in the renewable energy sector
Brazil's renewable energy sector is expanding at a 5% annual growth rate. In 2024, the country added a record 10.9GW (Gigawatt) of installed power generation capacity, surpassing government projections.
To put into perspective: 10GW is the energy consumption of 7 - 10mn households during one year in the United States. This growth is expected to continue, with the Brazil Renewable Energy Market forecast to reach a total 235.62 gigawatts in 2025 and grow at a CAGR of 6.40% to reach 321.31 gigawatts by 2030. The solar energy segment is leading this charge, with 147 new solar farms contributing 5.6GW of new capacity in 2024 alone. Wind power follows closely, adding 4.3GW from 121 new wind farms. This rapid expansion has positioned Brazil as the sixth-largest wind energy producer globally.
A global leader in renewable energy production
Among the G20 Countries Brazil is leading with regards to the contribution of renewable energies to the energy mix with 88% according to a report of EMBER, a UK based Energy Think Thank.
Key players and market dynamics
The Brazilian renewable energy market is moderately fragmented, with key players including ENGIE Brazil, Eletrobras Furnas, Companhia Hidro Eletrica do Sao Francisco (CHESF), CPFL Energias Renovaveis SA, and Omega Geracao SA. These companies are at the forefront of Brazil's renewable energy revolution, driving innovation and growth across the sector.
Recent developments highlight the dynamism of this market. In February 2024, Statkraft AS inaugurated Brazil's largest wind farm outside Europe, the 519 MW Ventos de Santa Eugênia Wind Complex. In April 2024, Scatec ASA signed a 10-year power purchase agreement for a 142-MW solar plant in Minas Gerais, with an estimated capital expenditure of $94 million.
The renewable energy path forward
As Brazil moves towards a more sustainable energy future, several key trends are emerging:
Diversification of Energy Mix: Solar and wind power are gaining prominence, with offshore wind projects on the horizon.
Distributed Generation: This segment grew by 30% in 2024, reaching 34GW of total capacity.
Market Liberalization: The free energy market is expected to reach 41% of total consumption by 2025, offering new opportunities for competition and efficiency.
Green Hydrogen: Brazil is positioning itself as a major exporter, with a potential market of CHF 30 billion by 2050.
